The only time to use the liquid directly to the fabric is with a pinpricked pattern and even then the dots will bleed larger but it works very well. If you do go direct to fabric you won't need the sugar. Bluing from the bottle wiped over the pinprick holes with a small piece of felt or t-shirt.
